- Ms. Irene Njiru is the head of the Securities Issuance team in the Financial Markets Department at the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), focusing on the execution of fiscal agency role to effectively bridge the budgetary gap earmarked for financing from the domestic market. She is also the project manager for the Retail Bond Project which aims at democratizing government securities by facilitating low value investors/mass market to invest/participate in the government securities. She has worked in the in the Financial Markets Department since 2003, having previously worked in the Banking Department for 11 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Nairobi in Economics and Philosophy and holds a postgraduate degree in strategic management from the same University. Irene is a Certified Banking Risk professional by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) and holds a certificate in Digital Money from Tufts University in Boston. Irene has spearheaded the successful implementation of key technological advancements at CBK including the Central Bank Front Office System, Central Depository for Securities (CDS) Accounts Management System and the Treasury Mobile Direct. She was Project Manager for the which was launched by the President of the Republic of Kenya on September 11, 2024. The DhowCSD was awarded winner of the 2024 Central Banking Award for innovation and financial markets infrastructure in the United Kingdom and it has made significant impact in Kenya’s financial markets through inter-alia promoting market deepening, improved market liquidity distribution, enhanced operational efficiency in the domestic debt market, promoting capital market growth, financial inclusion and exponential growth in the number of investors.
